TALKING TO THE DEAD

There was a very famous scientist by the name of William Crookes who lived from 1832 to 1919.

He was an eminent scientist who had received numerous awards in the field of science.

He decided to study that which was very taboo in England as it is in this country.

He decided to look into the reports of mediums, and people who communicate with the dead and do it from a strictly scientific perspective.

People expected that he would return and support the religious position that all of this was of the devil and against God and was nothing more then quackery etc etc.

What he did do, was demonstrate the existence of life beyond what we know as death, and when he published his results he was set upon by the scientific community, as well as religion.

In his written report to the British Association in 1898 Sir William Crookes prefaced the report by quoting a scientist who had come before him Luigi Galvani (September 9, 1737 – December 4, 1798).

In 1791, Galvani discovered that the muscles of dead frogs legs twitched when struck by a spark.^[1]

This was one of the first forays into the study of bioelectricity, a field that studies the electrical patterns and signals of the nervous system.

Galvani suffered the attacks of critics, and was made fun of in the same way Sir William Crookes was.

Galvani said this, and Sir WIlliam Crookes put it into his statement as if to say, "me too".

"I am attacked by two very opposite sects - the scientists and the know-nothings.

Copying Galvani's statement for himself, leaves us to ponder what great force in nature, Sir. William Crookes was referring to.

It becomes very interesting because his discovery is confirmed by modern science.

He is claiming materializations of the deceased in séances, and working with mediums ,and the religious and scientific community is attacking him.

William Crookes was born on 17 June, 1832 in London.

He studied at the Royal College of Chemistry and became one of the most important scientists of the XIX century, both in the field of Physics and in Chemistry.

He combined private experimental research with business. He also edited several photographic and scientific journals.

Having inherited a large fortune from his father, he devoted himself from 1856 entirely to scientific work of various kinds at his private laboratory in London.

His studies of cathode rays were fundamental in the development of atomic physics.

In 1879 Sir William Crookes, identified a fourth state of matter, now called plasma.

He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, becoming its president between 1913 and 1915.

He obviously is someone who would normally be taken very seriously, but in this case what he has discovered goes against religious beliefs, and that is not politically correct, and thus he has these people come against him as they would today.

William Crookes, as a scientist of international repute, decided to investigate Spiritualism.

He explained the reasons for his inquiry: "I consider it the duty of scientific men who have learned exact modes of working to examine phenomena which attract the attention of the public, in order to confirm their genuineness or to explain, if possible, the delusions of the dishonest and to expose the tricks of deceivers".

So as you can see he goes into this work with an open mind, but as a scientist, either to confirm that communicating with those who we perceive to be dead is genuine, or to expose those as delusional or dishonest who do such things.

He began by studying one of the most famous mediums of all time, Daniel Dunglas Home, and was soon convinced that Home was endowed with a powerful psychic force.

Many believed that Crookes would expose the phenomena he witnessed, but this rapid conversion to the ranks of believers surprised the public and shocked his scientific colleagues.

What is being said here is that one of the most prestigious scientists of his time had been convinced that communicating with those thought to be dead is real.

The experiments that made him really famous were with the medium Florence Cook, at the time, only a teenager.

Through her mediumship, there occurred a series of materializations of the Spirit Katie King, which lasted almost three years.

Just before the Spirit stopped appearing, Crookes obtained a total of 44 photographs, among which were, according to him, 'some inferior, some indifferent, and some excellent'.

When Crookes started to report about his experiments to the scientific community, he found unrestrained hostility.

He was even accused of complicity with Florence Cook, and of having an affair with her.

"Thirty years have passed since I published an account of experiments tending to show that outside our scientific knowledge there exists a Force exercised by intelligence differing from the ordinary intelligence common to mortals".

"I adhere to my already published statements. Indeed, I might add much thereto."

Religion has such a tight control over the minds of people, and it was even worse then, that even someone as brilliant as William Crookes cannot be listened to when he says, he has proof that people who we think have died are actually very much alive.

You would think that this would produce much joy, but instead of listening to a person of such stature as William Crookes the people instead chose to listen to the robed ones of religion, and their power aligned politicians.

We have lost the very ones we loved so much not because they are gone beyond our ability to communicate with them, but we have lost because we have chosen to live our lives in the fears religion has placed on our head.

One is from Albert Einstein which I believe would apply to William Crookes and the other is from William Crookes when he was asked by a screaming scientist if he thought it was possible for a dead person to communicate with the living.

Sir William Crookes in his reports address the accusations that Katie King was actually Florence Cook, the medium.

He addressed the doubts and the doubters and confirmed his findings, that the séance was not to contact the dead, but to contact the living who existed in a parallel dimension.

"To stop short in any research that bids fair to widen the gates of knowledge, to recoil from fear of difficulty or adverse criticism, is to bring reproach on science".

"There is nothing for the investigator to do but to go straight on; "to explore up and down, inch by inch, with the taper his reason; "to follow the light wherever it may lead, even should it at times resemble a will-o'-the-wisp."

One who is revered to this day as the one who discovered the most fundamental power of the universe:

Here he is presenting his case that your loved ones who have passed on can come back to this dimension for a visitation.

Can you imagine what this means to you if his discovery concerning the materialization of those who have passed on is proven to be true?

"My own knowledge at that time scarcely extended beyond the fact that certain phenomena new to science had assuredly occurred, and were attested by my own sober senses and, better still, by automatic record."

"I was like some two-dimensional being who might stand at the singular point , and thus find himself in infinitesimal and inexplicable contact with a plane of existence not his own."

"I have glimpses of something like coherence among the strange elusive phenomena; of something like continuity between those unexplained forces and laws already known. "

That last sentence of Sir William Crookes states that he has found something in the forces of the unexplained that are consistent with the laws of our physical world.

"It would be well to begin with telepathy; with the fundamental law, as I believe it to be, that thoughts and images may be transferred from one mind to another without the agency of the recognized organs of sense-that knowledge may enter the human mind without being communicated in any hitherto known or recognized ways".

I believe that Sir William Crookes is now speaking of a quantum reality of the sub atomic world that we can confirm with a physicist of today, John Cramer

My feeling of that statement is that if there is to be a telepathic contact between two people, there must be an invisible force between them that makes it happen.

What I believe William Crookes is saying here, is that the telepathy from one brain to another has to have something to receive the signal and then make it possible for it to reach others.

For instance. A television signal is transmitted from the source. You cannot see it because you cannot reach the frequency which is travels on.

The medium in this case would be a television set, which aligned to that frequency , receives the signal and then makes it available for you to see.

In the case of telepathy that would be from a deceased to a living being on earth, the medium which is the television set in the above example, turns out to be a person who is able to somehow receive the transmitted signal from the deceased and make it available for you to see.

"All the phenomena of the universe are presumably in some way continuous, and it is unscientific to call in the aid of mysterious agencies when, with every fresh advance in knowledge, it is shown that ether vibrations have powers and attributes abundantly equal to any demand-even to the transmission of thought."

I read this to mean that Sir William Crookes is saying that there is no need to call upon Gods, or Angels, or things of that sort, when this type of communication is scientific.

He says there are vibrations in that ether that have powers that can even accommodate transmission of thought.

The structure of brain and nerves being similar, it is conceivable there may be present masses of such nerve coherers in the brain whose special function it may be to receive impulses brought from without through the connecting sequence of ether waves of appropriate order of magnitude.

Sir William Crookes is saying that there may be nerves in the brain that have a special function of receiving impulses from without the body.

"It is known that the action of thought is accompanied by certain molecular movements in the brain, and here we have physical vibrations capable, from their extreme minuteness, of acting direct on individual molecules, while their rapidity approaches that of the internal and external movements of the atoms themselves".

Again Sir William Crookes refers to vibrations which are related to thought acting on molecules within us.

"A formidable range of phenomena must be scientifically sifted before we effectually grasp a faculty so strange, so bewildering, and for ages so inscrutable as the direct action of mind on mind."

This is really interesting because Sir William Crookes is talking about mind connecting to mind.

In other words, it is all taking place in what we know as the sub atomic quantum realm.

A bit earlier in this study I provided you with the statement of Sir WIlliam Crookes giving his opinion how an external force (suggester) could be received into a recipient.

Of course William Crookes is talking about his materialization of the deceased Katie King.

Sir William Crookes in 1871 said that in the invisible realm there was a force that he called the suggester to another mind that he called the recipient.

Let's call that first electron of John Cramer the suggester of Sir William Crookes.

So just as Sir William Crookes said 145 years ago, the invisible suggester looks for a recipient.

If Sir William Crookes is proved right about that statement as to how invisible forces contact each other, should we not also consider that he may be right concerning the materialization of Katie King from the dead?

Notice he talks not only of thought transmission, but image transmission as well.

To judge from the comparative slowness with which the accumulated evidence of our society penetrates the scientific world, it is, I think, a conception even scientifically repulsive to many minds.

Do you see, how William Crookes recognized the fact that someone materializing from the dead is scientifically repulsive to many?

We have supplied striking experimental evidence; but few have been found to repeat our experiments.

We have offered good evidence in the observation of spontaneous cases, as apparitions at the moment of death and the like, but this "evidence has failed to impress the scientific world in the same way as evidence less careful and less coherent has often done before.

Our evidence is not confronted and refuted; it is shirked and evaded as though there were some great a priori improbability which absolved the world of science from considering it.

Isn't this interesting? Sir William Crookes puts forth the facts that he has provided evidence but the scientific world wants no part of it.

The final sentence I find particularly good. The evidence he provided was not refuted. It is avoided as if there was some great reason why the scientific world should even consider such a thing.

Our alleged facts might be true in all kinds of ways without contradicting any truth already known.

Here William Crookes points out that the facts he has presented about materialization of the deceased, does not contradict any scientific information known at that time.

In other words, seeing your deceased loved one again, is perfectly normal and natural.

According to ancient and medieval science, aether (Greek αἰθήρ aithēr^[1]), also spelled æther or ether, is the material that fills the region of the Universe above the terrestrial sphere.

So William Crookes spoke of vibrations not only within us, and within the air around us but in the regions of the universe.

These vibrations differ in their velocity and in their frequency.

That they exist, extending from one vibration to two thousand millions of millions vibrations per second, we have good evidence.

That they subserve the purpose of conveying impressions from outside sources of whatever kind to living organisms may be fully recognized.

Sir William Crookes way back in 1872 said that the vibrations transmit impressions from outside sources, to living organisms.

At the fifth step from unity, at 32 vibrations per second, we reach the region where atmospheric vibration reveals itself to us as sound.

In the next ten steps the vibrations per second rise from 32 to 32,768, and here, to the average human ear, the region of sound ends.

Sir William Crookes is showing us how electron vibrations in the sub atomic invisible realm, manifest into our physical reality.

In the chart above we see the 5th step at 32 vibrations a second is where sound appears.

At step 15 the vibrations rise to 32,768 per second and we can no longer hear them.

But certain animals probably hear sounds too acute for our organs; that is, sounds which vibrate at a higher rate.

We next enter a region in which the vibrations rise rapidly, and the vibrating medium is no longer the gross atmosphere, but a highly attenuated medium, "a diviner air," called the ether.

This is interesting. The vibrations now are too much for the gross atmosphere that we live in.

William Crookes immediately places this place of the higher vibrations in the realm of what we call God or spirit.

From the sixteenth to the thirty-fifth step the vibrations rise from 32,768 to 34359,738368 a second, such vibrations appearing to our means of observation as electrical rays.

Now we move into the realm of the unknown. So many vibrations a second as to be beyond our individual abilities to comprehend.

Leaving the region of visible light we arrive at what is, for our existing senses and our means of research, another unknown region, the functions of which we are beginning to suspect.

It is not unlikely that the X-rays of Professor Röntgen will be found to lie between the fifty-eighth and the sixty-first step, having vibrations extending from 288220,576151,711744 to 2,305763,009213,693952 per second, or even higher.

In this series it will be seen there are two great gaps, or unknown regions, concerning which we must own our entire ignorance as to the part they play in the economy of creation.

Further, whether any vibrations exist having a greater number per second than those classes mentioned we do not presume to decide.

But is it premature to ask in what way are vibrations connected with thought or its transmission?

We see that Sir WIlliam Crookes is suggesting that the higher vibrations in the ether of which we know little or nothing, are connected with transmission of thought.

And so the use or need for a medium who can reach those frequencies or vibrations is necessary for the contact to be made.

In other words just as John Cramer the physicist told us earlier, the ability to make the electron absorb the photon depends on vibration.

I first call up in my own brain a picture of a scene I wish to describe, and then, by means of an orderly transmission of wave vibrations set in motion by my vocal chords through the material atmosphere, a corresponding picture is implanted in the brain of anyone whose ear is capable of receiving such vibrations.

Here Sir William Crookes gives us a very basic lesson as to how vibrations from our vocal chords enter the material atmosphere and then implant into someone else the vibrations that are translated by the brain in the thought we wished to convey.

We are studying how it would be possible for us to be in contact with those who have physically died.

As William Crookes explains, if I wish to get the picture of a house from my head to your head, I transmit the picture of that house to your head by causing a vibration.

The vibration reaches you and your brain then transcribes the vibration into the picture that I am transmitting.

Of course this is done by speech, but the point is that speech is vibration which by vibrating the receiving ear drum can be then decoded by the brain allowing you to see what I saw.

If I am thinking of a polar bear. I speak the words and in so doing my vocal chords cause a vibration that vibrates into your ear drum, causing impulses that are translated by your brain into a picture of a polar bear.

In that way , by vibration, I have transmitted a picture from my head to your head.

If the scene I wish to impress on the brain of the recipient is of a complicated character, or if the picture of it in my own brain is not definite, the transmission will be more or less imperfect; but if I wish to get my audience to picture to themselves some very simple object, such as a triangle or a circle, the transmission of ideas will be well-nigh perfect, and equally clear to the brains of both transmitter and recipient.

Here we use the vibrations of the material molecules of the atmosphere to transmit intelligence from one brain to another.

In the newly discovered Röntgen rays we are introduced to an order of vibrations of extremist minuteness as compared with the most minute waves with which we have hitherto been acquainted, and of dimensions comparable with the distances between the centers of the atoms of which the material universe is built up; and there is no reason to suppose that we have here reached the limit of frequency.

Röntgen speculated that a new kind of ray might be responsible. 8 November was a Friday, so he took advantage of the weekend to repeat his experiments and make his first notes.

In the following weeks he ate and slept in his laboratory as he investigated many properties of the new rays he temporarily termed X-rays, using the mathematical designation for something unknown.

Nearly two weeks after his discovery, he took the very first picture using x-rays of his wife's hand, Anna Bertha.

Waves of this character cease to have many of the properties associated with light waves.

They are produced in the same ethereal medium, and are probably propagated with the same velocity as light, but here the similarity ends.

They can not be regularly reflected from polished surfaces; they have not been polarized; they are not refracted on passing from one medium to another of different density, and they penetrate considerable thicknesses of substances opaque to light with the same ease with which light passes through glass.

It is also demonstrated that these rays, as generated in the vacuum tube, are not homogeneous, but consist of bundles of different wave-lengths, analogous to what would be differences of color could ,"We see them as light.

Some pass easily through flesh, but are partially arrested by bone, while others pass with almost equal facility through bone and flesh.

He now focuses on X-Ray vibration frequencies as another possibility in the transmission of mind to mind.

It seems to me that in these rays we may have a possible mode of transmitting intelligence which, with a few reasonable postulates, may supply a key to much that is obscure in psychical research.

In talking about x rays as possibly transmitting intelligence, Sir William Crookes couches that with the statement, "with a few reasonable postulates". The word postulates means assumptions.

So here William Crookes is saying that even though there may not be total proof, there can be reasonable assumptions that x-rays can transmit mind to mind.

He says that his position of transmitting mind to mind possibly through x ray may supply a key that is obscure in psychical research.

a. Capable of extraordinary mental processes, such as extrasensory perception and mental telepathy.

MY COMMENT

So William Crookes is saying that those who try to consider how mental telepathy may work should consider x-ray frequencies, which at the time they did not.

Note that William Crookes does not limit the possibilities to x rays but includes rays of higher frequency.

Also keep in mind that what is being discussed here are vibrations.

The faster they go, the higher they go.

Let it be conceived that the brain contains a center which uses these rays as the vocal chords use sound vibrations (both being under the command of intelligence), and sends them out, with the velocity of light, to impinge on the receiving ganglion of another brain.

Sir William Crookes speaks of a possibility that the brain could respond to vibrations and create vibrations and send them to another person who would receive them.

Notice he suggest they would leave the brain with the velocity of light which would be photon at 186,400 miles per second..

What would be the result?

You felt the urge to call someone who will say, that's strange you called, I was just thinking about you.

That is what Sir William Crookes is referring to.

When those things happen, it is because of vibrations from the brain of another directed to you.

In this way some, at least, of the phenomena of telepathy, and the transmission of intelligence from one sensitive to another through long distances, seem to come into the domain of law and can be grasped.

MY COMMENT

William Crookes is saying that there is nothing spiritual, nothing religious, nothing scary about this.

It is a natural movement of electrical energy from transmitter to receiver.

A sensitive may be one who possesses the telepathic transmitting or receiving ganglion in an advanced state of development, or who, by constant practice, is rendered more sensitive to these high-frequency waves.

Experience seems to show that the receiving and the transmitting ganglions are not equally developed; one may be active, while the other, like the pineal eye in man, may be only vestigial.

Here Sir WIlliam Crookes is making the point that by understanding natural vibrations at various frequencies creates the real possibility of telepathy from one mind to another because brains are electrical in nature and work on vibration frequencies.

It is not spiritual, not supernatural.

It is the manifestation into physical reality of vibrations in the sub atomic realm.

If anything (at least to me) proves the honesty of Sir William Crookes as it applies to his of materializing Katie King back from the dead, the statement that much of the research is tentative and much may turn out to be erroneous.

He is positive Katie King appeared from the dead but he is not positive as to how the science of what occurred can be described..

He is asking for people of science to put down their concerns for their own reputations and instead look at the subject from a scientific standpoint.

To stop short in any research that bids fair to widen the gates of knowledge, to recoil from fear of difficulty or adverse criticism, is to bring reproach on science.

It is notable on account of the high scientific standing of the inquirer, the stern and yet just spirit in which the inquiry was conducted, the extraordinary results, and the uncompromising declaration of faith which followed them.

It has been a favorite device of the opponents of the movement to attribute some physical weakness or growing senility to each fresh witness to psychic truth, but none can deny that these researches were carried out by a man at the very zenith of his mental development, and that the famous career which followed was a sufficient proof of his intellectual stability.

It is to be remarked that the result was to prove the integrity not only of the medium Florence Cook with whom the more sensational results were obtained, but also that of D. D. Home and of Miss Kate Fox, who were also severely tested.

Crookes confesses that he began his investigations into psychical phenomena believing that the whole matter might prove to be a trick. His scientific brethren held the same view, and were delighted at the course he had adopted.

Note below how local leaders were happy that someone with such integrity as Sir WIlliam Crookes was investigating mediums and seances, but when William Crookes came back and said, it really happened, they turned against him.

Profound satisfaction was expressed because the subject was to be investigated by a man so thoroughly qualified.

They had little doubt that what were considered to be the sham pretensions of Spiritualism would now be exposed. One writer said, “If men like Mr. Crookes grapple with the subject we shall soon know how much to believe.”

Dr. (afterwards Professor) Balfour Stewart, in a communication to Nature, commended the boldness and honesty which had led Mr. Crookes to take this step.

Crookes himself took the view that it was the duty of scientists to make such investigation.

He writes: “It argues ill for the boasted freedom of opinion among scientific men that they have so long refused to institute a scientific investigation into the existence and nature of facts asserted by so many competent and credible witnesses, and which they are freely invited to examine when and where they please.

For my own part, I too much value the pursuit of truth, and the discovery of any new fact in Nature, to avoid inquiry because it appears to clash with prevailing opinions.” In this spirit he began his inquiry.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle paints a picture of a scientific community anxious to discredit spiritualism and very happy that someone with the credentials of Sir WIlliam Crookes is going to conduct the investigation.

Note where the one person above said, that as long as William Crookes is doing the investigating, they shall all soon know what to believe.

But they were obviously not prepared for William Crookes to be part of the materialization of the physically dead Katie King.

In his house at Mornington Road a small study opened into the chemical laboratory, a door with a curtain separating the two rooms.

In the outer in subdued light sat Crookes, with such other observers as he invited.

At the end of a period which varied from twenty minutes to an hour the materialized figure was built up from the ectoplasm of the medium.

The existence of this substance and its method of production were unknown at that date, but subsequent research has thrown much light upon it, an account of which has been embodied in the chapter on ectoplasm.

The actual effect was that the curtain was opened, and there emerged into the laboratory a female who was usually as different from the medium as two people could be.

This apparition, which could move, talk, and act in all ways as an independent entity, is known by the name which she herself claimed as her own, “Katie King.”

The student has certainly the right to claim that Florence Cook and Katie King were the same individual until convincing evidence is laid before him that this is impossible.

The points of difference which he observed between Miss Cook and Katie are thus described:

Katie’s height varies; in my house I have seen her six inches taller than Miss Cook.

Last night, with bare feet and not tip-toeing, she was four and a half inches taller than Miss Cook.

Katie’s neck was bare last night; the skin was perfectly smooth both to touch and sight, whilst on Miss Cook’s neck is a large blister, which under similar circumstances is distinctly visible and rough to the touch.

Katie’s fingers are much longer than Miss Cook’s, and her face is also larger.

Having seen so much of Katie lately, when she has been illuminated by the electric light, I am enabled to add to the points of difference between her and her medium which I mentioned in a former article.

I have the most absolute certainty that Miss Cook and Katie are two separate individuals so far as their bodies are concerned.

Miss Cook’s hair is so dark a brown as almost to appear black; a lock of Katie’s, which is now before me, and which she allowed me to cut from her luxuriant tresses, having first traced it up to the scalp and satisfied myself that it actually grew there, is a rich golden auburn.

It beat steadily at 75, whilst Miss Cook’s pulse a little time after was going at its usual rate of 90.

On applying my ear to Katie’s chest, I could hear a heart beating rhythmically inside, and pulsating even more steadily than did Miss Cook’s heart when she allowed me to try a similar experiment after the séance.

Tested in the same way, Katie’s lungs were found to be sounder than her medium’s, for at the time I tried my experiment Miss Cook was under medical treatment for a severe cough.

This delicate task needs a rigorous employment of the method of exclusion-a constant setting aside of irrelevant phenomena that could be explained by known causes, including those far too familiar causes, conscious and unconscious fraud.

He pioneered the field of quantum computation by being the first person to formulate a description for a quantum Turing machine, as well as specifying an algorithm designed to run on a quantum computer.^[1]

His research has focused on cosmology, combining theoretical work with new measurements to place constraints on cosmological models and their free parameters, often in collaboration with experimentalists.
